Huaynaputina
Huaynaputina means “new one.” It is located in southern Peru. It was the source of the largest historical eruption of South America in 1600 AD and one of the largest in the world in the past 1000 years. Huaynaputina was remarkable because of its size, because it was the only major explosive eruption in historic times in the Central Andes and also for its impact on global climate.
The volcanic eruption started on February 19th and finished on March 6th, although signs of the eruption started on the 15thof February when mini earthquakes began. Over 200 earthquakes were felt in the period of 24 hours and on the 15th houses started to fall and collapse.
The eruption at Huaynaputina spewed around 12 cubic kilometres of ash and most of that was during the period of two days and it produced nearly 30 cubic kilometres of deictic tephra.
The effects of Huaynaputina’s eruption in 1600 were felt worldwide. The eruption caused extensive damage to the major cities of Arequipa and Moquegua.
It took around 150 years to be completely recovered.
Since Huaynaputina’s eruption 5 more eruptions have occurred including Laki in 1783, Krakatau in 1883 and Pinatubo in 1991. Yet none of these as major as Huaynaputina.
